Hello lovely people and welcome to an actual baking related blog after my last one which was *checks last post* forever ago!
This particular blog post is going to be more of a think piece than a deep dive into the title topic. Maybe down the line I will dabble in a follow-up with interviews from other bakers (this is a hint to drop those emails if you're interested *wink wink*). Anyhow, since my dive back into baking some odd amount of months ago I have been exploring a plethora of baked goods from bread to English muffins, cupcakes to loaves.
On this journey I have discovered I cannot bake brownies.
I know how crazy that sounds given brownies are like part of the 'My first baking experience' package alongside chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies, and vanilla cupcakes. For some reason my brain is unable to cobble together a proper brownie no matter what recipe I follow. I either do too much cocoa powder, too much liquid, not enough flour, don't bake it long enough or it just completely flops.
The funny part of this ordeal is I can craft some decent blondies but maybe that's because it is closer to making a heavier and dense cake? Who knows.
Either way I have kind of given up on trying to make brownies from scratch almost exclusively use the premixed box stuff. Which in this age of accessibility, I feel no shame in doing. It did get me thinking though, among party chefs and bakers there's gotta be shortcuts we take because we are just weak in that particular area no matter how we approach it.
So to my fellow baked good makers do you feel you have a baking weakness? What steps have you taken to shore it up?
I know we can get better at a particular thing by practice and discovering other methods or approaches to the thing but sometimes you just get tired you know? Other times things just don't click the way you want them to so we have to turn to other alternatives.
I just feel like this isn't often talked about if at all but that could be because I am not going through formal schooling for baking and not part of deep baking circles. I do think it is something that should be discussed given that not everything you bake will be perfect for sure. Some things you'll nail on that first time out, other times it takes that 21st try or maybe not even succeed at all. It'll be like that sometimes and that's okay.
Like I said this was more of a think piece and me wanting to bring up the subject. Let me know if you agree, your thoughts on all bakers having a weakness is one area or another and how you feel about using premixed/store bought options as shortcuts.
Until next time lovelies <3
